Anastassia's Review
I have read many novels surrounding the horrors of the Holocaust, but Night truly does stand out from the rest. The fact that it reflects a true story makes it that much more personal and makes the reader feel even more invested in the truths that are being told. The images are so haunting and chilling that you really feel for Eliezer and everything that he is going through.
As in terms of teachability, the language is not difficult at all and could be read at the middle school level. However, as I have said before, the images and themes that are associated with the novel are very mature and would have to be presented to a mature classroom. Definitely not younger than 8th grade, but I feel like the most appropriate age would be 9th or 10th grade. The book is rather short so I feel like you could bring a lot more creative lessons and activities in the mix, and not simply focus on getting the book read.
The book allows for multiple possibilities in the classroom and really gives the teacher many different angles to approach it with which would be very cool. I think the flexibility of the novel and the heavy and unforgettable pictures it paints for the reader could make for an unforgettable unit in the classroom.
